Things to tell your husband

1.31.2017

These are just a few things that I really feel help build up my husband. As a woman, I feel like my husband goes so out of his way to make sure I feel beautiful and loved, but I don't do that as much for him. I really think it is something that many of us women don't do for the men in our lives, and that makes sense. It isn't something that we are told we should do. It isn't something people tell you when you ask for marriage advice. It is just something that is so overlooked.

Lately, I have been trying to make an effort to let my husband know what he means to me. I have just a few things that I would recommend saying to your hubs on a more regular basis.
For me, I don't tell him these things daily, but I really try to say at least one uplifting and very loving thing a week. Obviously, I am always loving towards him, but these are things that are just a little extra. I also don't want them to lose their meaning so I don't want to overuse them.

// You're my best friend.
This is something I say to Hamilton once in awhile and I absolutely love the way he reacts to it. If he's on his phone, he will immediately put his phone down and give me a huge hug. I have found that this is something he loves to hear so much. For us, we spend so much time together, but it is easy to forget that we really are besties.

// I am so happy we met on that day (whenever you met).
Spend a little time reminiscing, but do it from your point of view. Tell him what thoughts you had about him at first. Usually, this makes us laugh so hard because the VERY first time we met, neither of us really liked each other haha. It's fun to hear the others point of view. But use your own discretion because some people are more sensitive and may not want to hear certain things you thought.

// You are such an amazing husband, father, worker, provider (whatever you think he needs to hear at that time).
Some weeks are really rough. Hamilton will come home from work some days and just tell me about how hard it was. These are the days that I make sure to tell him uplifting things. Because he is such a hard worker and he doesn't always think he is.

// Thank you for always supporting me.
My husband doesn't necessarily agree with everything I think, say or do, but he always stands behind me and supports what I am doing. Obviously, if I'm doing anything super crazy he'll let me know, but he really does support me in every way. Also be sure to recognize that your significant other may not support you in the same way as someone else's.

// Tell him 5 things you love about him.
Whenever we get into an argument or after an argument, one of us will usually ask the other, "what do you love about me?" This really helps change the mood and help us get back to that place of love.
I would recommend doing this at other times, though, too. This shouldn't just be a way to change the mood after a fight. This should be something you do on a regular basis. It is so important to regularly remind each other of why you love them. There are so many things that make us up as people, and it is such a nice reminder to be told those specific things.

I hope you take some of these and apply them in your life. They have really helped us uplift and make our marriage more beautiful. These things really help my husband feel loved and appreciated. If you have any others that are different, comment them down below! I would love to hear the things you all do as well.

Why I started my blog

1.24.2017

I started my blog in summer of 2013 after I graduated high school. So, I've had it for quite some time haha. I was really good about posting for the first year, then I stopped for a few months. I have been blogging off and on since then. My new years resolution was to start posting regularly again. Because it has really been sporadic the past year and it is something I'm pretty passionate about!

I figured this would be a really good way to document my life and the things that happen. It was such an awesome outlet for me and it helped me a ton. I moved to Orlando for college and I really had a hard time for the first few months. My boyfriend was away for his two-year mission (no, that's not my husband) and I didn't know anyone.

I tried to make friends and go to all of the activities my church offered, but I was still having a hard time. So this blog was an amazing outlet for me. It helped me get through the tough times (and there have been a ton.) I didn't have a ton of followers, but that really isn't what matters to me. This blog is here for me to write about things I'm passionate about and let out some emotion once in awhile.

Anyways, so basically I started this blog because I truly thought it would really help me stay sane (and it has.) Plus I absolutely love writing. It is something I have loved since I can remember. When I was a little girl I would have TONS of notebooks full of stories that I would write. I was always so proud of them and thought I could write children's books. Which was a dream of mine for a long time, but my new dream is to write a fiction novel. I actually have a little bit that I've written and a whole outline of what I want to write and I think it could be really good! Maybe I'll post a little excerpt to see what you all think! We shall see.

So that's kind of all guys. I don't have a crazy story about why I started blogging. It has definitely changed and transformed over the past 4 years and I don't even think you can find my first posts haha. I have deleted/made them private. I don't even have the same name that I did when I started. I changed the name of my blog pretty much right after I got married. I am planning on buying my domain name and have been for awhile so I wanted to make sure I had my new last name there for awhile before I did that!

I hope you enjoyed this and that you got a little insight as to why I do what I do! Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great week :)

Giving Thanks

11.14.2016

10 things I'm grateful for. There are so many more than that, but I figured the beginning of each week during November I would share 3 things I am thankful for. I know I already missed a week, but better late than never.
Thanksgiving is such a good reminder of the things we have in our lives. I have had some struggles this year but that doesn't mean that I'm not grateful for so much. My life is full and I have so many amazing people surrounding me.
 1. I am grateful for sunsets and the ocean. I love spending my days on the boat fishing, snorkeling,  or just swimming.

2. My fur babies. I love them all so much! The white and grey kitty is Kate Wiskerton and the multi colored kitty is Hermione and our dog is Bowzer. They fill our home with joy and lots of laughter. There is definitely never a dull moment with them.
3. My best girl friends. I love them so much. They make my life whole and add so much joy to every life experience I have. I am so grateful for each and every one of these ladies. They are always there when I need them most.
 4. Whale sharks! They are my favorite animal EVER! And I was lucky enough to go to the Atlanta Georgia Aquarium to see them up close and personal. The next step is going to Mexico to swim with them.

5. My parents. I am so extremely grateful for my parents. They have given me a wonderful life. I was blessed enough to be able to travel with them and be homeschool up until 7th grade, which allowed me to spend my days on the boat fishing with my dad. I hold those memories near and dear to my heart. They are also the best examples. My mom is currently in nursing school and I couldn't be more proud of her.
6. My in-laws. I am so happy to have another set of parents and so many more sisters and brothers! I love them all so much and they all mean the world to me. Hamilton's mom and dad are my parents too and it is so amazing to have in-laws that I am close with.
 7. My nieces and nephews. They are growing up way too fast! I remember when they were all born. It is really not okay how fast they are growing up! They are so smart and so loving. They are the best and funniest bunch of kiddos ever.
8. I am so grateful for my calling. I am the young women's 2nd counselor in my ward. I love those girls so much already and I hope that I can teach them as much as I know they will teach me.
9. I am grateful for the gospel. I am grateful for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am so grateful for the temple and that I am able to go there with my husband and friends. It means so much to me to have a place to go where I feel safe and at home. I love having the knowledge that my Heavenly Father is always watching over me and helping me along the way (way more than I will ever know).

10. My husband. Hamilton Aaron Birkeland. I am so grateful for him and all he does for me. He is kind and patient and all the things I need to work on. He is an example to me each and every day. I love him more each day and can't wait to see what the future holds for us.

Tell me what you're grateful for! This month is all about being thankful and grateful. Pass it along and share what you're grateful for.

our house is a home

9.19.2016

it has taken 3 months but i finally unpacked the last couple of boxes.
to be fair, they were just boxes of books that were very difficult for me to pick up because of how heavy they were..
anyways, we have our bookshelves in our kitchen by our table because thats where they fit the best. and all the books are finally put out and the final boxes are empty!!

it is slowly but surely turning more and more into a home and i love being a lil home maker. it makes me so happy to have everything clean and tidy and in its place. and to cook dinner for my husband.
it gives me such joy to have my husband come home after a long work day to a clean home and dinner coming soon.

hamilton got a new job a few weeks ago with an arborist and he works 6 days a week and usually is gone for 10+ hours a day. i miss seeing his face as much as i used to, but he likes his job a lot, and im glad that he's happy.

we also added a new member to our family. we have a dog! his name is bowzer and he is a pitbull and he is the absolute sweetest boy ever. i love him and i think he really makes our family complete (for now)
i have always had a dog at my house, but the past 3 years i haven't, and it makes me so happy! i love him and he loves us too. we adopted him from the shelter probably a month and a half or so ago, and our little family feels so much more complete now :)

 he's definitely ferocious, i know.

our little cuddle monster
isn't our place so cute? i love it
oh and bowzer ate his first shoe today..and yes, it was hamiltons favorite shoe..
i guess that means i have to replace them at some point

this guy.

9.05.2016

i have the most amazing and most supportive husband. he is so good to me.
i am no where near perfect and struggle to be the best i can be.
hamilton is so loving and caring towards me. i have had too many breakdowns to count and i lash out too often, yet he somehow finds ways to handle my attitude.
it can be difficult for me to deal with all the emotions that go through my mind.

i cant say enough good things about him.
he is so loving.
he is so amazing with my nieces and nephews, it just makes me excited to have children with him.
he is the hardest worker i know.
he is also the goofiest person i know.
we are constantly laughing.
he makes my cheeks hurt from how much he makes me smile.
i love how he pushes me to be better everyday.
he pushes me to accomplish my goals.
he talks with me about my crazy dreams i have for our future.
he will watch my beauty youtube videos with me.
he builds me up every single day.
he never lets me win games, which i hate sometimes, but it does make me try harder to use my brain haha.
he can have fun doing absolutely anything.
he will travel anywhere and everywhere with me.

and so so much more.

one of the first pictures of us. he made me go to this dance, but we had so much fun
this is his favorite picture of us from before we were dating

decisions, decisions

8.30.2015

so, this past year and a half has been the craziest. ever.
i am so grateful for the gospel and that i have a loving Heavenly Father.

for all my readers, and people who know me personally, you know that i was supposed to go on a mission last year. i got my call in february and then i made the decision that i shouldnt go.

it took a lot of praying and many, many trips to the temple to figure that out. and i was not happy about it. i was ready to go. i spent months preparing and learning so much. i knew i needed to listen to my promptings and do what i felt the lord was telling me to.

a week or so later i met hamilton, who i'm now married to. and a little over a month later, on the day i was supposed to fly to australia, my father passed away.

if i would have gone on my mission, i would have been so far away and since its two days of travel, i would've missed my dads funeral. i was so close with him and this was/is probably one of the most difficult things i've had to/am still dealing with.

i know that i was supposed to stay home and not go on my mission so i could be here with my family during this difficult time. it was important for me to spend those months preparing and learning so much about the gospel as well as myself.
 just doin his favorite thing

so much love. our last picture together before he passed two months later.
rest easy daddy. june 30, 2014.

i am still realizing why it was important for me to stay home.

so many things have happened other than my dad passing.

my mom, nephews, hamilton, and i all went to michigan in december.
hamilton proposed to me in january.
i was going to college.
working.
doing my best to do all the things i needed to.
i became financially independent.
planned my wedding.

it doesnt seem like a lot, but it was probably the most hectic, awful, yet amazing year.
in the midst of all these things may 22nd hit.
it's an emotional day for my family to begin with. my oldest brother, Satch, passed away in 2003. he was in a fatal car accident. and may 22nd is his birthday. so it's always a bit of a gloomy day.

i was at hamilton's house. sitting on the couch with his mom, him, and the little girl his mom watches. i get a call from my mom saying that my brother was in the hospital and she doesnt know whats wrong, but shes on her way now and to say a prayer.
my stomach dropped. i had the biggest pit in my stomach and i knew something bad happened.
i get a call probably a half hour later from my mom. she just said that my brother Sam had passed. i had no idea what to even say. it was such a shock to me. all i said to her was "okay, im on my way home."

i got up and went into hamiltons room. i had a lot of clothes at his house so i just started packing. mindlessly.
hamilton comes in and asks me what happened. aware of the call i had with my mom saying he was in the hospital, so i just shook my head.
it was friday which means i was supposed to be working and so was he.
he called both of our works and we went on our way to bradenton.

my brother was such a gentle soul. he was so loving and kind and had a heart of gold.
after our dad passed, he told hamilton that he felt like he needed to be a father-figure. and he was, all my brothers are.

 like father like son haha
christmas morning is obviously really rough
i love my family so much and i feel like it keeps getting smaller. it is so sad and seems so unfair.

i know that there is a bigger plan. and who knows why things happen. all i know is that i am so grateful that i listened to those promptings over a year ago. if i hadnt, i wouldve been in australia during all these things and i know i wouldve had such a hard time.

there have been some awful things that happened, but i know that im stronger and my heart is sad, but its so full of wonderful memories, and i feel like i have more love and understanding in my heart and mind than ever before.

and less than a month later i married hamilton aaron birkeland. it was the most beautiful and wonderful day of my life. my heart was heavy because the most important people in my life, the ones who taught me the most, my dad and brother werent able to be there to celebrate this joyous day with me and the rest of my family.
i had to honor those who couldnt be there

my life has been so full and amazing so far. i know that bad things have happened, and they dont seem fair sometimes. but i try to stay positive because i know ill be with my family again one day. it wont be soon and the journey there will not be easy, but itll be worth it.
